Volunteers
Exceptional Equestrians would not be able to operate without the help of MANY volunteers. One group lesson can require as many as 12 volunteers.
No experience with horses or helping people with disabilities is necessary to volunteer. We provide volunteer trainings prior to each session and can also offer on the job training during sessions.
Not only do our volunteers help us perform much needed tasks, but they also get the reward of helping our very special participants. One volunteer said, "I so look forward to going to the barn, because it makes me feel as good as it does the riders!". Volunteering is also a great way to get community service hours for work or school.
We've begun registration for our Winter and Spring 2024 Semesters. If you'd like to be part of our program, you can register online by clicking HERE or by downloading our paperwork HERE or contact us at (636) 390-2141 or [email protected].

Volunteering FAQs
What will I do as a volunteer at EE?
Most of our volunteers are used as sidewalkers, which means they provide physical, cognitive and/or emotional support to our clients as they ride. For some of our riders this means physically helping them sit up on the horse, but for many it simply means walking alongside and helping them follow directions. Volunteers are also used as leaders, to guide the horses in the sessions. Volunteers who are interested can go through training to help groom and tack the horses for lessons. We also use volunteers to help with barn work, cleaning tack, photography and light maintenance. Our Board of Directors is made up entirely of volunteers.
When can I volunteer?
We need volunteers for most of our sessions, which occur on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from the early morning until the evening and on Saturday morning. We ask our volunteers to work with our volunteer coordinator to select a specific class, and commit to coming at that same time throughout the session. During the summer, our schedule changes a bit, but we still need volunteers!
How many hours/weeks do I have to commit to?
Our shortest lessons are 30 minutes, so volunteers can commit to as little as 30 minutes per week, or as many hours as they want. The commitment is for the length of a semester. For our Fall Semester, it will be 14 weeks. If you're not able to commit to a full semester, we'd still love to have you on a substitute basis!
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Our minimum age to volunteer is 14, although we can occasionally make exceptions based on horse experience. Younger volunteers can sometimes help in the barn if supervision is available.
Will I get to ride horses when I volunteer?
Our volunteers are SO important to help our riders receive their very valuable therapeutic riding sessions. However, riding our horses is typically not part of the volunteer experience. Our horses have a busy workload with our program participants and are not available for additional riding. On some occasions, volunteer training sessions will include the opportunity to ride.
What will I get out of volunteering at EE?
Without question, for all of our volunteers, the most important reward they receive is helping our riders improve their lives. Seeing the smiles on their faces and watching them progress is so remarkable. Volunteer hours can be used to meet high school requirements or for college applications. Our volunteer coordinator is happy to fill out any paperwork necessary to confirm your volunteer time.
